IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a popular English language assessment test. IELTS exam assesses a candidate’s English proficiency who wants to study, work or migrate to an English speaking country. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a Standard English language test that assesses and evaluates the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers who basically want to enroll in an American university. ETS (Education Testing Service) administers this test and over 9000 universities, agencies and other institutions in over 130 countries accept the TOEFL score as proof of the English language proficiency of a candidate.
There are two versions of TOEFL – iBT (Internet Bases test) and paper-based test. Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing skills of candidates are assessed in TOEFL and the test score is valid for 2 years.
Internet Based TOEFL Writing section has two tasks: one integrated task and one independent task. For integrated task, the test takers read a passage on an academic topic, listen to related audio and write summary what they hear and then explain how this relates to the main points of the passage they read.
For the independent task the test takers are required to write an essay on minimum 300 words.
Paper Based TOEFL (PBT) writing section includes TWE (Test of Written English).
TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is an English language test designed by ETS. This is a widely popular English language assessment test among professionals. Organizations around the world use this test to hire, place and promote employees.
TOEIC test has a writing section that assesses the grammar, vocabulary, fluency and punctuation of the test takers. The writing test lasts for an hour and has around 8 questions. Question 1-5 gives some images and the test takers have to write sentences based on the given pictures. Response to a letter/ email and an essay writing or minimum 300 words are also required.
